Are you art lovers?

At only 20 km far, there is Pisa and you will be able to make a walk in Piazza Duomo to have a photo shot while you hold up the famous Tower.

At 60 km far there is Florence, the cradle of Renaissance, born just in Florence and whose paternity can be claimed by the Florentines only. Here you will risk the Stendhal syndrome: the Cathedral with the Brunelleschi dome, the Baptistery with Ghiberti’s golden Paradise Door and the Giotto tower from which you can admire the whole city. And then: the Fountain of Porcellino, where you can make a wish, then insert a coin in the small boar’s mouth and hope it falls in the grid so that your wish can come true. Then Piazza della Signoria, Uffizi Gallery, Palace Pitti and Boboli Garden, a romantic walk on Ponte Vecchio, better at night when the city mirrors itself in the Arno.

At 70 km far, we find Certaldo: famous to have given birth to Giovanni Boccaccio (famous poet and writer in 1300), this fortified village has come to us practically unbroken. Its main characteristic are the walls, buildings and streets made of terracotta that give a reddish colouring to the village and create a unique and charming atmosphere. Don’t miss the chance of a panoramic funicular ride to reach the most ancient part of the village.

At 50 km far, Vinci: located at the slopes of Montalbano, Vinci is a small middle age village, famous to be the birth place of famous Leonardo, inventor, engineer, technologist, who has helped to make Tuscany famous all over the world thanks to his intuitions and inventions handed down to our present days.

And then wonderful Siena, Monteriggioni, San Gimignano and many others, all magnificent, each of which with its history, all to discover.

Out of town trips

At a few km far from Lucca there are the thermal baths in Bagni di Lucca: one of the most famous tourist place in Garfagnana that is in the province of Lucca and it is located between the Apuane Alps and the main chain of Tuscan-Emilian Apennines.

The thermal water in Bagni di Lucca is considered one of the most important wellness sources in the Tuscan thermal complex: in fact these waters spring naturally at very high temperatures that are around 45° and 54°C.

At 14 km far only, you can reach San Giuliano Terme, Pisa: a charmed place, on a hill that looks at the panorama of the red roofs and of the Leaning Tower. Here water springs from a hot natural source and an ancient and noble palace rises among olive trees: the thermal residence built in 1743 for Francesco Stefano of Lorena, Grand Duke of Tuscany. During centuries kings and queens have chosen it for their wellness.

At 60 km again, the very famous Forte dei Marmi: besides of for the beauty of its beaches and historic centre, it is also famous for its feasts (Sant’ Ermete’s and San Francesco’s ones) and for its markets ( of Antiques, of Piazza Marconi, of Vittoria Apuana). From there you can arrive to Pietrasanta: ancient city of middle age origin, it is considered the historic capital of Versilia and the one of the artistic processing of marble.

These are only suggestions, nothing prevents you to go further of 80 km beyond La Spezia, also easily by train and reach the Cinque Terre, Unesco Heritage.

In short, there is plenty of choice also for sea and absolute relax lovers!

Are you lovers of mountain and trekking?

In few km you will reach the Pizzorna where you will find Parco Avventura, or the Monte Forato where you will find a breath-taking wing, unmissable!

At few km you will find the Garfagnana, full of paths and rivers to do rafting; you can visit the grotta del vento and the spectacular Vagli, the ghost lake and village: you have to know that when a maintenance is necessary, the lake is emptied and the ruins of Fabbriche di Careggine, built in 1270 during Middle Age, resurface. Once, it was a village of blacksmiths coming from Brescia, who worked the iron extracted from Monte Tambura.

It is said that, during the periods in which the lake is emptied and the village resurfaces, the ancient inhabitants go back to their homes.

Whichever your curiosity is, a better positioned city than Lucca to satisfy it within 100 km does not exist.

The San Martino Cathedral

The first thing of this wonderful structure that you notice is the asymmetry of the right side of the façade that had to adapt itself to the already existing bell tower. On the façade you see the statue of San Martino while he shares his coat with a poor man, On the right side there is a labyrinth that goes back to the myth of Arianna and Theseus and, symbolically, to the path to take in life to search for the way of redemption.

The San Michele Church

It is located in the homonymous square where the Roman Foro raised once time upon. From the very high façade a San Michele Archangel stands out while he is killing the drake. According to a legend, at the finger of the statue there is an exceptional diamond that you can see shining at night.

The San Frediano Church

One of the most ancient places of worship in Lucca, founded by the saint whose name it bears. The mosaic on the façade will leave you speechless.

Guinigi Tower and Delle Ore Tower

From the top of these two towers you can admire a very beautiful panorama on the roofs of the Tuscan city, a look that allows you to appreciate its harmony and find the same urban structure that Romans wanted. Therefore, what saying, if you don’t suffer from vertigo and you are fine in taking many steps (230 steps in Guinigi Tower and 207 in the Tower delle Ore) you will not miss this spectacular panorama

Via Fillungo

The most famous and walked street in Lucca, where Casa Riccardo also overlooks. Site of ancient shops and store of any kind, it goes through almost the whole city.

Piazza Napoleone

The biggest square in Lucca. Very beautiful and majestic, it will charm you. Today is a space with stores, bars and restaurant, meeting place of Lucca inhabitants and tourists, but it has not lost it ancient and elegant glamour.

Piazza Anfiteatro

It resumes the ancient layout of the Roman amphitheatre. You can grasp the harmony and the beauty of this square by admiring it from its most central part. It is possible to enter it through four vaulted doors. Very typical, you can stay in pubs and restaurants enjoying the beauty of the city in front of a Tuscan “tagliere” and good wine.

Palazzo Pfanner

Built in 1660 by a local family, it will charm you with its beautiful enchanted gardens. Location of the famous film “Il Marchese del Grillo” directed by master Mario Monicelli and performed by Alberto Sordi.

Piazza Santa Maria Forisportam

It is called so because further to the walls of the Roman age, it was outside one of the entrances to the city. It has been by the running middle age walls. More commonly called Piazza della Colonna Mozza by Lucca inhabitants because of the broken column in the middle of the square.

Botanic Garden

The most valuable garden in Lucca offers different experiences in the various seasons. From far species until the local flora, its beauty and its colour will leave you speechless. To enter the garden it is necessary to get tickets and take information about opening days and times.

Ponte del Diavolo (The Devil’s bridge)

The bridge of Maddalen, also called the Devil’s bridge, goes over the river Serchio near Borgo a Mozzano. The Devil’s bridge is called so because the legend says that it was just the devil who built it in change of the first soul who had gone through the bridge.

Massaciuccoli Lake

The Massaciuccoli Lake is part of Migliarino Natural park. The most famous and shot attraction is the walkway in Lipu oasis, totally inside the vegetation of the lake. It is possible to visit the lake also on board of a small boat, made available by the Lipu volunteers.

Pietrasanta

City on the coast of Tuscany and capital of the artistic processing of marble. Attraction centre for artists coming from all over the world. A small open-air museum, you will not be able to resist to its history and beauty.

Montecarlo

The middle age corners of this small village will make you plunge in the heart of Tuscany. The protagonist of this small city are the several vineyards and oil groves that make you feel like inside a painting. Impossible not to visit the historic centre of Montecarlo, ideal to discover local flavours and wines of Tuscany.

Isola Santa

Hidden Corner in the heart of Apuane, charming in every season of the year. Ideal for the ones who love walking in the greenery breath-taking panoramas immerged in nature.

Viareggio
